COMMON PAIN POINTS

Why Road Design Documentation Stalls

Civil engineering firms, construction companies and municipalities regularly run into the same problem: survey data exists, but producing permit-ready road design documentation from it requires specialist Civil 3D skill and capacity that most teams don't have in-house.

Survey Data Without a Design Team

LiDAR scan or topographic field survey is complete but there is no Civil 3D engineer available to process it into a road design. The project is ready to design — the capacity is not there.

No Permit-Ready Working Drawings

Construction cannot begin — and a building permit cannot be obtained — without a complete set of working drawings. The documentation gap is holding up the entire project timeline.

Road Built Differently from Original Design

The road was constructed with deviations from the approved design. As-built road documentation is needed for handover, facilities management or re-permitting — but no one has capacity to produce it from the survey.

Wrong Standard or Layer Format

Drawings delivered by a previous provider use the wrong design standard, incorrect layer naming, or a coordinate system that does not match the project. The drawings cannot be used and the work has to be redone.

Capacity Gaps on Large Road Projects

A civil engineering firm wins a road construction or reconstruction contract but does not have in-house Civil 3D capacity for the documentation scope. Hiring for a single project is not viable. Outsourcing road design documentation is the only option.

Coordination Across Adjacent Disciplines

Road design must align with external lighting, electrical supply to buildings, landscaping and utility networks. Without a team managing cross-discipline coordination, conflicts surface late — delaying permits and increasing rework cost.

WHAT WE DO

Road Design Documentation from Your Survey Data

What Road Design Documentation Covers

Road design documentation is the complete set of engineering drawings and calculations required to build or reconstruct a road — and to obtain legal permission to do so. It covers horizontal alignment with circular and transition curves, road profile design, a 3D corridor model with ditches and earthwork formation, cross-sections at the required intervals, earthwork volume calculations, working drawings and the permit submission package. Without this documentation, construction cannot proceed: builders have no drawings to work from, and the client cannot obtain a legal permit, determine project cost, or procure materials.

We Process — You Supply the Survey Data

We are a remote, office-based road design documentation team. We do not conduct field surveys or on-site scanning. You supply the source data — a digital surface model (DEM or DTM), topographic survey in CAD format, cadastral plan with plot boundaries and red lines, and a project brief — and we produce the full road design and permit documentation package. This makes our road design service a direct production extension of your survey or engineering workflow.

From Digital Surface Model to Working Drawings

The process begins with the DEM and topographic plan. We design the horizontal alignment — inserting circular and transition curves for smooth vehicle flow and setting right-of-way boundaries. We extract the ground profile and design the road profile: for new roads, elevation is set from the minimum fill height; for reconstruction projects and urban streets, the profile closely follows existing terrain while preserving adjacent building access elevations. The corridor is then built in Civil 3D — pavement, shoulders, cut and fill slopes, ditch geometry — and cross-sections are generated at the required interval.

Permit Documentation and Cross-Discipline Coordination

Road design is not a standalone discipline. Our engineers coordinate with adjacent project sections — external lighting, electrical supply, drainage, landscaping and urban greenery — and include coordination materials in the permit package. The permit submission package covers project documentation, area and quantity statements, and all materials required for the planning authority to issue a construction permit. We produce deliverables to any required international standard — confirmed at project briefing stage.

Why GIS JOT

Road Design Services vs. General CAD Outsourcing

Road design documentation from survey data is a specialist Civil 3D workflow — not general CAD drafting. The difference shows in accuracy, standard compliance and the ability to work directly from a digital surface model.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What data do I need to provide for road design documentation?

We need: a digital surface model (DEM or DTM), a topographic survey in CAD format (.dwg), a cadastral plan showing plot boundaries and red lines, existing utility network data where available, and a project brief specifying road category, design speed and applicable standard. Additional context - adjacent building floor levels, existing road grades at tie-in points — helps us design the profile accurately. We confirm all data requirements at project briefing stage before production begins.

Do you carry out field surveys for road design projects?

No. We are an office engineering team — we process survey data and produce design documentation. All field survey and data capture is performed by your team or a local survey partner. We receive the survey outputs and produce the full road design and permit documentation package from them. This makes our service a production extension of your existing survey workflow, not a replacement for it.

How long does a road design documentation project take?

Timeline depends on project scale and complexity. A typical 1–3 km road design package — alignment, profile, corridor, cross-sections and working drawings — takes 2–4 weeks from receiving complete survey data. Permit documentation preparation adds 1–2 weeks. For larger or more complex projects, we provide a phased delivery schedule with interim drawing reviews so you are not waiting until the final handoff. We provide a firm timeline before production begins.

Which national road design standards do you work with?

We work with any international road design standard — national, regional or client-specified. Design speed, lane widths, curve radii, cross-section parameters and ditch geometry are all confirmed at project briefing stage against the applicable standard, before any design work begins.

Can you coordinate road design with adjacent utility and infrastructure sections?

Yes. Road design documentation is rarely produced in isolation. Our engineers coordinate with adjacent project sections including external lighting design, electrical supply to buildings, civil drainage, landscaping and urban greenery — and include coordination materials in the permit documentation package. If your project includes these disciplines separately, we align our deliverables and drawing sets with them. For multi-discipline documentation projects, see our CAD drafting services.

Can you produce road design documentation as part of a wider civil engineering outsourcing engagement?

Yes. Road design documentation is often commissioned alongside other engineering documentation services — permit plans, as-built drawings, CAD drafting for adjacent structures. We support civil engineering outsourcing engagements where road design is one component of a larger project scope. If you need a dedicated engineer embedded in your team for an ongoing highway design workload, see our managed GIS and engineering teams.
